Jingle_Virus is
a java applet and musical software interface that allows users to play port
servers
as if they were musical instruments. Jingle Virus is a duet between a user
and
a server. Jingle Virus repurposes hackerish port scanning exploratory server
probing techniques as new playful means of interfacing with network data.
A server contains 0-255 commonly used ports or entryways, many of which are unused. (A server can actually host 65,535 ports but 255 are sufficient for most needs.) Conventionally, different port numbers are assigned to handle requests for differents sorts of information protocols like http(for web sites), ftp(for download)and smpte(for email). Oftentimes, before illegally breaking into a server, hackers search for back doors left by careless syst admins by performing a port scan on the server's ports. Jingle_Virus repurposes this initially harmless act as friendly exploratory play with the server's surface membrane.
Commonly assigned port numbering conventions are ftp: #21, gopher: #70, telnet: #23, and usenet: #119.
